Lightweight Anti-Theft Gear

Worrying about your security and being able to enjoy yourself whilst traveling do no go hand in hand. With that in mind, here is a run through of items which will allow you to out smart any would be thieves and get more out of your time on the road.

From my experience traveling a major part of keeping your valuables from getting stolen is not to offer would be thieves any opportunity. Sounds simple, yes? Simple enough though some would be thieves don’t need to be given opportunity at all.

This post looks at a number of ways at keeping your money hidden. The trade off you have to work out for yourself is how hidden you want the money to be versus how accessible you want the money to be also. The exception to this for me is perhaps the Design Go Luggage Clip Pouch (shown under the Hidden Pockets/Clips section below) – which I find to be exceptionally well hidden but also perfectly accessible.

Everything in this post is designed to be lightweight and small – but still effective as being anti-theft. Most take up next to no weight and would be effective for lightweight travel.

Neck Strap

Your classic means of hiding money for the traveler. And popular for a reason – excellent at keeping your money hidden and secure whilst also reasonably accessible, but I would suggest taking a look at some of the other ways you can hide your money listed below. Big enough for a passport, some credit cards and cash without being visible. Check out a popular version here.

Hidden Pockets/Clips

The only piece of anti-theft gear I use is the Design Go Luggage Clip Pouch. It clips to the inside of your shorts/trousers/skirt. Big enough to to fit a couple of EFTPOS, Credit or ID cards and some cash. Small enough that you nor anyone else will ever know you are wearing it. If this particular design is not to your liking their are a bunch of similar products floating around.

MoneyClipAnd this one. Which is a slightly different version – the two small straps attach to your belt and the whole thing can be tucked inside your pants to keep it hidden, or flipped out if you need to get something out. Big enough for a passport, some credit cards and cash without being visible. Check it out here.

Money Belts

In terms of hiding a bit of cash, you can’t get much better hidden than a money belt. Having your money hidden in your belt of course means that it is not accessible – except in situations where you can get a little alone time. Check it out here.

A slightly different version of the money belt is that shown below. As opposed to the example above which can actually be used to as a belt to hold up your trousers, this example sits slightly above your waist/normal belt. These are pretty popular at the moment. Perhaps because they keep your money quite hidden, are perfectly comfortable and are quite accessible all at the same time. Big enough for a passport, some credit cards and cash without being visible. Check it out here.

Anti-Theft Portable Safe

Designed for storing a small collection of your valuables whist traveling. Or rather a collection of your small valuables (small camera, passport, wallet etc) – and deter casual thieves. The Pacsafe 100 is made of a sturdy combination of canvas and high-tensile stainless steel wire, which makes for a great combination for stopping all but the most committed thieves from getting at your things. As another plus the Pacsafe Travelsafe 100 is not particularly heavy (12 ounces in fact) so you won’t feel like you are being burdened by this extra safety device.

If you are carrying a laptop with you, or other large valuables, you are best off carrying the Pacsafe 12L (which can carry up to a 15.4 inch laptop). For a smaller amount of gear you can get away with carrying the smaller Pacsafe 100 instead (picture above).

For want of a better word, diversion products are those that look harmless (a water bottle, lipstick, chip packet) but actually contain a hidden compartment holding your valuables. There are a few examples floating around – but it can be a little hard to find one that look genuine.

Door Lock

Portable Security lock for most left and right hand doors. Requires no keys or combinations. Small enough to fit in your pocket. Great gift for anyone who travels and requires added security. Can only be used from the inside of the door that open towards you which locks out all intruders. Travelers Security Lock is designed to fit most standard metal and wooden doors and door frames. Door Alarm

The 120-decibel alarm warns you and your neighbors of a forced entry, and it’s enough of a deterrent to scare off most would-be intruders. The alarm is activated when pressure is applied to the top of the device when the door is opened. A sensitive trigger switch prevents intruders from bypassing the alarm by sounding the siren no matter how far the door is opened. Check it out here.
